We Are SoWashCo Parents
Clear information. Constructive participation. Strong public schools.
SoWashCo Parents is an independent community resource helping families and residents understand South Washington County Schools, follow school board decisions, and participate in the issues shaping our district.
School district decisions affect students, families, employees, taxpayers, and the wider community—but the budgets, policies, and public processes behind those decisions can be difficult to follow. Important information is often spread across lengthy reports, meeting materials, presentations, and state data.
This site exists to make that information more accessible.
What We Do
Explain district finances
School finance is complicated. Revenue comes from multiple sources, funds are governed by different rules, and a large budget number rarely tells the full story.
We translate budgets and financial reports into plain language, examine the assumptions behind major proposals, and help readers understand where district money comes from, where it goes, and what tradeoffs decision-makers face.
Follow public decisions
School board decisions deserve meaningful public attention. We highlight significant proposals, explain their potential effects, and help community members find the source documents needed to evaluate them.
Our goal is not simply to report what the district decides, but to help residents understand how and why those decisions are made.
Encourage constructive participation
Strong public schools depend on an informed and engaged community. We help parents and residents identify opportunities to ask questions, share their experiences, and participate in district processes.
Effective advocacy does not require hostility. It requires good information, clear questions, and a willingness to remain engaged.
What We Believe
We believe:
- Students should remain at the center of district decision-making.
- Families and residents deserve clear, timely, and complete information.
- Financial transparency strengthens public trust.
- Public discussion should reveal important choices and tradeoffs—not merely announce decisions after they have effectively been made.
- Questions and disagreement can be constructive when grounded in evidence and respect.
- Strong schools benefit the entire community, including residents without children currently enrolled.
Our Approach
SoWashCo Parents strives to distinguish documented facts from interpretation and opinion. Whenever practical, our analysis points readers toward original budgets, meeting materials, public records, and other source documents so they can examine the evidence themselves.
We support strong public schools while recognizing that support does not require unquestioning agreement. Responsible oversight, thoughtful criticism, and constructive advocacy can help the district make better decisions and maintain the confidence of the community it serves.
